Park Mall and Fish & Co

Park Mall, the popular destination for home furnishings in Penang Road, will put up its shutters for good come end of September. It will be demolished to make way for two office blocks and a retail component.

The iconic building (Glass House) of Fish & Co will be demolished, due to redevelopment efforts by Park Mall.

Ellison Building (1924)

I joined the Urban Sketchers sketchwalk at Niven Road yesterday. Woke up late, so I went to the spot that I have in my mind. In order to highlight the building that part of storey units will be torn down and ‘reconstruct and reinstate’ in 10 years time.

London 3rd- 7th August

In London, was shocked by the crowds at the Southbank, Waterloo and bankside. I had decided to slow down. Enjoying my ride on the tube, meeting  the people and searching for the food that I had missed.

International Urban Sketchers Symposium Manchester 27th- 30th July 2016 Part 2

Most of the sketches were done on Seawhite cartridge paper sketchbook after the Symposium. I used the box of drawing tools from the goodie bag. Love the 4B Graphite from the Cretacolor.

31th July

Went back to sketch Castlefield with Tony the next morning after Symposium. Met another sketcher, Marc Dewelde from Belgium. Had a friendly chat with him then rushed back to check out the room.

The Little Northern Hotel @Millstone. Millstone Inn is a pub for old age people. I hung around while waiting for my key to the room. Friendly atmosphere and great live music. As it wasn’t a peak season, I was given a room with a window, which you could see it behind the building (From the sketch).

There something about Northern Quarter that I like, mixed with arts and old buildings. I decided to sketch this building with the mural.

Chong Wen Ge Cafe

The founders of Chong Wen Ge cafe are made up of a group of middle age “uncles”- who, even though established in their own profession, feel inclined to start Chong Wen Ge Cafe – in efforts to reach out to the younger generation and increase the awareness of Singapore’s own cultural roots. Thus, instead of allowing the cafe to be subjected to the cookie-cutter formula of serving eggs Benedict and waffles – the founders were strict in ensuring that all decisions right down to the smallest detail, were made with the heritage and culture in mind.

The name “Chong Wen Ge cafe” plays tribute to the ‘Institute for the Veneration of Literature’, Singapore’s first Chinese school. Sharing the same building as Singapore’s first music box museum and Peranakan tile gallery, Chong Wen Ge cafe is also part of Thiam Hock Keng temple complex, that was gazetted as a National Monument in 1973s.

Daxi old street 大溪老街 (Taoyuan, Taiwan)

Located in Taoyuan County, Daxi Old Street is one of the famous Taiwan old streets that used to be a bustling hub for camphor and tea trades. Daxi Old Street is comprised of old stores on Heping Road, Zhongshan Road and Zhongyang Road. The town of Daxi boomed with trades of camphor and tea, and the passage of Daxi Old Street was built as a shortcut for workers to pass through so that they could transport goods without walking a long way.
